    Used Conn 44H Trombone

The 44H is a “Vocabell” instrument, made aprox. 1946.  Similar to the Connqueror trumpets and long cornets of the 30′s and 40′s, it doesn’t have a bell rim-wire.  It has a #2½ bore (0.485″).

    What Conn said in 1937:

The 44H Connqueror trombone with new principle Vocabell marks a new era in trombones. Never before have trombone artists experienced such ease of blowing, such power, and such beauty of tone. The Vocabell vibrates freely and in sympathy with the vibrating column of air in the instrument. Delicate harmonics, formerly dampened out by the stiff bell on conventional trombones, can now be reproduced to enrich tonal coloring. The upper register now speaks out with surprising power. The whole scale, from bottom to top, is smoother, more even, more flexible, and more resonant than on any other trombone. Delicate radio tests prove it. Made at Columbia Broadcasting Studios, New York, under supervision of Nathaniel Shilkret and without Conn’s knowledge, these tests showed from 12 to 15 decibels more power for the Vocabell. Used by the great trombone virtuoso of the Metropolitan Opera, Simone Mantia; “Pete” Beilman, first and “hot” trombone with Ted Weems; Caroll Bates, star with Jack Denny; Irvin Verrett, first chair, Phil Harris; Jack Lacey, first trombone with Andre Kostelanetz on CBS; Joe Harris, first chair and “hot” trombone with Benny Goodman; and many others. Marvelous slide action, with extra long carriage for lower positions. Standard bell 7 inches. Slide lock, bell lock, tuning in bell. Modern styling at its best. Bb medium bore. Now made lighter so it weighs the same as other trombones.

    Used Conn 4H Trombone

This 4H is a Victor model instrument.  Conn produced a 4H model almost continuously from at least 1919 to 1958, with a break between 1932 and 1939. This is the last 4H model, produced between 1954 and 1958. It has a #2½ (0.484″) bore, which is decidedly small by modern standards. In both trombones and trumpets the bore sizes have steadily increased over the past century. That may be a reason why Conn stopped production of the 4H after 1958: perhaps the small bores weren’t popular anymore. From the Conn model number list it would appear that it was available with both regular and lightweight slides. This fact isn’t mentioned in the 1956 catalog however.

    What Conn said in 1956:

Professional in quality and performance, similar to the 6H Victor but with slightly smaller bore and bell. Beautiful tone, accurate intonation… ideal for both band and orchestra. Features “Crysteel Airfloat” slides… outside slides of special Conn bearing formular alloy. Slide lock for added safety. Length 46″, weight 3 lbs. 4 oz., bell diameter 7″.

    Used Yamaha YSL-681G Trombone

The YSL-681G has a continuous taper bell section that improves intonation with even resistance in all registers.  The chrome-plated nickel silver drawn inner slide is very durable and has a quick, sensitive response.  The one-piece drawn yellow brass outer slide maintains an accurate diameter throughout its length and this type of construction ensures, airtightness, smooth action, and exceptional durability and adds resonance to the sound.  Specially designed one-piece inner slide stockings guarantees airtight slide construction, offer smoother slide action and better alignment, even in the extended 6th and 7th positions.  Long-lasting nickel-silver tubular braces contribute to the stability of the slide and enhance smooth slide action.  A one-piece bell has an axial (lengthwise) seam, making it a continuous extension of the instrument’s material. This results in pure, uniform resonance and superior tone. A hammered gold brass bell produces a slightly more broad and rich, yet pure and perfectly-balanced tone with quick response and extra presence due to advanced manufacturing techniques.  Hand-lapping slides ensures an absolutely perfect fit and seal between the slide parts. Such a perfect fit helps to achieve smooth air flow and smooth action and improve the response and intonation of the instrument.  Perfectly rounded tubing results in less turbulence and a smoother air flow, thus allowing for an excellent scale and reduced resistance.  A high-energy laser fuses the brass together for a virtually seamless bell which allows continuous even vibrations.  The unique slide lock design on all Yamaha trombones keeps the slide locked in place and keeps it from accidentally falling.  The large, easy-to-hold nickel silver bracing guards against possible slide damage if the instrument is dropped and also lessens fatigue while playing.  Yamaha trombones have mouthpipes featuring special acoustic designs allowing for precise intonation and greater blowing control.

The 681G features a .547” large bore, 8.5” one piece, hand-hammered gold brass bell and gold lacquer finish.
